Drink Smoothies
It's official. Smoothies are now part of everyday life in
the UK. In order for statisticians to monitor inflation, The Office of National
Statistics (ONS) creates a typical basket of everyday goods. In the ONS report
out this month, smoothies have been included for the first time, replacing
items like CD singles and frozen vegetarian ready meals. Does this reflect
a desire to be healthier? Or are people just too busy to peel a banana? Either
way, smoothies are the perfect way to top up your fruit intake, effortlessly.
Whether you're a dedicated smoothie consumer or a curious first timer, here
are some interesting facts about smoothies.
| • |
The smoothie
(as we know it) was first in the spotlight back in the 40's when movie stars
enjoyed a fruit-rush before going on set. In California (rumoured to be the
birthplace of the 'smoothie') you can now get a smoothie delivered direct
to your door within 90 minutes. |
| • |
The difference
between a smoothie and a juice is that a smoothie is created by blending the
whole fruit with all its nutrition - whereas a juice is simply the juice extracted
from the fruit. |
| • |
There is currently
no legal definition for a smoothie, however, if legislation followed juice
market guidelines only a few brands would remain true smoothies; the remainder
would be labelled as 'smoothie drinks' as they are diluted with yoghurt and
sugar. True smoothies do not contain dairy products, preservatives, colourings,
additives or sugar. They are just pure fruit, crushed. |
| • |
Smoothies
are becoming a recognised form of nutritional fast food, 'food on the go'. |
| • |
Some smoothies
can be suitable for people with gluten intolerance, Coeliac UK has a list
of approved brands. Remember, always read the ingredients label. |
| • |
Smoothie packaging
comes in all different shapes and sizes! Some can even be stocked in vending
machines. |

There is even
a week dedicated to celebrating smoothies around the globe www.internationalsmoothieweek.com |
